Canada World Youth Programs

Canada World Youth manages several youth exchange programs for young people. They are currently recruiting for 2012-2013 programs for their various programs including Youth Leaders in Action, Global Learners, International Aboriginal Youth Internships and the Aboriginal Youth Excellence Program. These opportunities are aimed at 17-29 year olds and include experiences both within and outside of Canada.

French Language Bursaries

The Explore program gives students and opportunity to visit another region of Canada while learning French for give weeks in the summer. Participants must have completed grade 11 to be eligible.

Lester B. Pearson College Scholarship

February 15 Deadline

One Saskatchewan student is chosen each year to attend the two-year, International Baccalaureate program at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, an United World College. This provides recipients with the opportunity to excel academically, to become involved in service activities and to gain an increased understanding and tolerance for world cultures.
 
The scholarship is limited to Grade 11 students attending a Saskatchewan school that is provincially funded. The selection process involves a half-day session where students give a presentation and participate in discussion on  pre-assigned topics. A personal interview follows in the afternoon.

Saskatchewan - Skills Canada Competitions

Skills Canada Saskatchewan will be hosting the 14th Annual Provincial Skills Competition March 15th – 16th, 2012 in Regina. Check out the website for competition areas  and register in January, 2012. For more information, call the Skills office at 306-775-1890. With over 30 skill areas there are many competitions that do not require access to a specialized shop area. Preparation for competitions like Work Place Safety, Job Skill Demonstration, Prepared Speech, and Job Interview can be supported in any school setting

CWSE-Prairies Logo Contest.

All high school (grades 7 to 12, inclusively), college and university students in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are encouraged to enter the CWSE-Prairies logo contest. The logo’s symbology should integrate the five concepts that are the core of the Chair program. The deadline for entries is January 15, 2012.

The winning logo will be used on the program website and on selected promotional materials that will be distributed by the NSERC-CWSE-Prairies program to students, teachers and other stakeholders inCanada, but particularly in the Prairies.

Pre-employment Hair Stylist is the newest addition to Lakeland College's pre-employment programs

Pre-Employment Hair Stylist 26 -Week Pre-employment Training Certificate

In 22 weeks program you'll learn and practice the hair stylist trade during evening and weekend classes. This will be followed by a 4-week practicum. In just 6 months, you'll be ready to work in this exciting trade. 

 •In partnership with the Lloydminster Public School Division, Lakeland College students will participate in lecture, hands-on training and labs in the innovative hairstyling classroom at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School.

•Instructors teach from an industry standard as well as Pivot Point curriculum and texts.

•Students will learn about the fundamentals of the hairstyling profession.

•Program content will concentrate on haircutting and styling, with an introduction to texturizing and colouring.

•Students will be given the opportunity to live the learning during hands-on practice, labs and a 140 -hour practicum.

•Prior to practicum, students are equipped to challenge their first year apprenticeship training exam.

•Following the practicum component of the program, successful students will have the skills to join the workforce while completing the remaining portion of the 1,400 hours of work experience required for the Alberta Apprenticeship Board.

•High school students enrolled in the cosmetology program can build on their skills by taking part in this evening and weekend program - meaning they will gain exceptional training and experience and be ready to work soon after graduation.

Schedule:

The first program session starts January 30, 2012 and ends July 28, 2012.  Classes will be held during evenings and weekends.

Requirements:  Applicants must have English Language 10-2 and Applied Math 10 or  equivalent or pass an entrance exam and/or interview.

University of Saskatchewan Competitive Entrance Awards

Application Deadline: February 15

Competitive Entrance Awards are based on academic achievement, financial need, and/or contributions to school and community life. These awards also recognize particular backgrounds, acknowledge contributions to certain clubs, and reward achievement in music or athletics. Competitive Entrance Awards are available to:

• students proceeding directly from high school to university; and
• students who have been out of high school for one or more years and have less than 18 credit units transferable to a program of study at the University of Saskatchewan.

Starting in 2012-13, each student can receive payment of one Guaranteed Entrance Scholarship and one Competitive Entrance Award. If eligible to receive multiple awards, students will be contacted to confirm which award they will be accepting. Students can receive additional awards administered at the college/department level or from an external source. Self-declared St. Thomas More (STM) students may be eligible for additional awards and will be contacted when the STM awards application becomes available (usually in August). Here is information about the UR Guaranteed Program as described by the U of R:

The UR Guarantee Program will support students through every step of their university experience to successful employment. We will be there to make sure their transition is smooth and stress-free.

Students applying for selection to the BFA Visual Arts Major may make an appointment with the Department of Visual Arts for a portfolio review and interview beginning February 1st. 2012.

Schulich Leader Scholarships

These new scholarships are for students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics areas of study at participating Canadian universities in the fall of 2012.

This program asks every high school to select one student to represent their school as a Schulich Leader Nominee. From this pool, 20 universities across Canada will select one outstanding student to be their Schulich Leader, each of whom will receive a four-year scholarship valued at $60 000 to support their studies. United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth

Application Deadline: January 15, 2012
Grade 11 students, ages 16 or 17, with a minimum of one year of high school remaining are eligible to apply for a 10-day, all expense paid tour of New York City/The United Nations.
All applicants must be willing to speak in a public speaking competition in Regina in late February 2012 and submit an original essay of 450-500 words describing the United Nations involvement in a current affair.

New Holland & Lakeland partner to enhance agriculture programs

Lakeland College and New Holland Agriculture announced in September a new multi-million dollar, 10-year deal that will propel Lakeland students to the forefront of post-secondary agricultural education and hands-on training that incorporates advanced technology and the most up-to-date equipment. As part of the new agreement with Lakeland, New Holland will consign agricultural equipment to the college on a rotating basis annually or otherwise agreed upon. This academic year, about $320,000 worth of equipment including a T7 Series Tier IV EcoBlue Tractor, a 50 HP Boomer50 Tractor, a 56 HP L223 Skid Steer Loader, a manure spreader, a BR7090 round baler and four Rustlers utility vehicles have arrived on campus. During the 10-year collaboration, it is estimated the total retail value of the New Holland equipment consigned to Lakeland will exceed $12 million. In recognition of New Holland’s significant commitment, the college has renamed its farm operation to be the Lakeland College Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland. New Holland also established a $100,000 endowment fund at Lakeland that will supply a number of annual student scholarships and awards which will start in 2013, the college’s centenary year.

Academic Excellence Scholarships

Lakeland College is now accepting new student applications to programs that qualify for Academic Excellence Scholarships. Based on their Grade 11 average in five eligible subjects, Grade 12 students will receive an Academic Excellence Scholarship when they apply to Accounting Technician, Agribusiness, Business, Educational Assistant, Environmental Sciences and University Transfer. Scholarship amounts are:

•              $1,500 = 85% minimum average

•              $2,500 = 90% minimum average

•              $3,500 = 95% minimum average

Campus Visit & Tuition Credit Programs

From now until August, students travelling more than 101 km from their permanent home for a campus tour of either Lakeland College’s Vermilion or Lloydminster campus will receive a tuition credit of:

•         101-150 km = $140 total tuition credit

•         151-200 km = $170 total tuition credit

•         201-250 km = $200 total tuition credit

•         251-350 km = $235 total tuition credit

•         351-500 km = $340 total tuition credit

•         501-700 km = $475 total tuition credit

•         More than 700 km = $600 total tuition credit (maximum available)

Students who take a campus tour will be entered to win a $1,000 tuition credit when they come for a campus tour. Names of two lucky new students (one for each campus) are drawn at the beginning of every academic year.

Top 20 under 20™ applicants will meet the following eligibility requirements:

• A young person who has demonstrated significant amounts of Innovation, Leadership and Achievements in their life, school, community, province or country

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship

Earth Day Canada launched the 2012 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program to recognize and cultivate tomorrow's environmental leaders. This is an opportunity for students graduating from a Canadian high school  to earn one of twenty $5 000 entrance scholarships to go towards their post-secondary education, regardless of their chosen field of study. All they have to do is demonstrate excellence in their school studies and a commitment to the environment through school or community initiatives. A national winner will also receive a Panasonic notebook computer.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme was developed to encourage all youth ages 14 to 25 to be active, to participate in new activities and to pursue their current interest in four different areas. It involves goal-setting, fun and challenges. It is a non-competitive program and individuals benefit through their own efforts and grow from the experience. Bronze, Silver and Gold levels are included in the programme.

The AFOA-Meyers Norris Penny LLP Aboriginal Youth Financial Managements Awards are open to First Nation youth in grades 11 and 12. Winners attend AFOA's National Conference and participate in a special Youth program designed to introduce youth to careers in Aboriginal finance and management.

Do the Math 2011

The Canadian Mathematical Society, in partnership with the University of Toronto and Université Laval, is pleased to announce the 2011 Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC), taking place on Wednesday, November 2. The COMC is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition that is open to any student with an interest in mathematics. The competition is now in its 16th year. The COMC is designed to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics, and to develop analytical and problem solving skills that will be essential to their future careers. This year there will be an expanded awards program, a new prize program, and a three section exam format encompassing regular, intermediate and advanced problems. The COMC is the main qualifier for the Sun Life Financial Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). Top scoring students will receive an invitation to write the CMO, an advanced competition written only by expressly invited students. Loran Awards

The world of computer gaming and the computer game industry will also be discussed, investigating topics such as the computer game job market, computer game advertising and distribution, and emerging computer interfaces like mobile devices, Wii, and Kinect.

Monsanto Canada Opportunity Scholarship

Deadline: May 27, 2011

This program is available to Canadian High School students from family farms who are enrolled in their final year of high school as of May 27, 2011 and eligible to graduate from high school in 2011. These students must be planning to enroll at a Canadian post-secondary institution (degree or diploma) in a first-year agriculture program.

Successful applicants will each be awarded a scholarship valued at $1500, based on demonstrated academic standards and leadership in the community. Selection will be made by an independent panel.

Spend a week with Encounters with Canada - Canada's largest youth forum! APTN Flag Contest

APTN is inviting young people between the ages of 12 -17 from across the country to design a flag that represents the richness and diversity of all of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples, and which illustrates what National Aboriginal Day means to them personally. As Canada’s only Aboriginal television network, this contest is just one of the ways APTN is providing opportunities for young people to share their vision and pride of Aboriginal culture and heritage.
The contest winner and a parent/guardian will be flown to Winnipeg to receive his/her prize and be part of APTN’s National Aboriginal Day celebrations. The winning flag will also fly on top of APTN’s headquarters in downtown Winnipeg. Saskatchewan School Boards Association Education Scholarships

The Saskatchewan School Boards Association offers two $2500 scholarships each year. One goes to a student who is entering university in Saskatchewan and the other to a student entering a recognized institute of applied arts and sciences in Saskatchewan.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated good character, community leadership, financial need and a 500 word essay.

Radiation Therapy Open House

The Saskatchewan School of Radiation Therapy is inviting interested parties to attend a Radiation Therapy Open House. This tour/information session will consist of a short presentation about a career in radiation therapy and the education required to become a radiation therapist, and a tour of the radiation therapy department.

Saskatchewan Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, along with Dominion Comman are offering 10 scholarships of $300 each. In addition, Saskatchewan Command is offering 10 bursaries of $300 each.

Certified Management Accountants Scholarship

Deadline: July 29

This high school scholarship of $1000 is available to one graduating high school student who is entering the accounting program at the University of Regina, University of Saskatchewan or SIAST. The scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest GPA in Grade 12, and will be presented at the CMA annual convocation ceremony in November.

To apply, the applicant should send a letter of applicant to the CMA office. An original high school transcript should be included, along with a 250 word essay explaining why he/she has chosen to pursue a career in accounting.

SIAST Business Programs Contest

Contest runs from March 1 - March 31, 2011.

Students aged 15 and over are invited to enter this photo contest. Tuition prizes of $1,000 and $750 are available for SIAST Business programs as well as two iPads! The Miller Thomson Foundation has increased the National Scholarship Programme from $200,000 to $300,000 annually, awarding 100 entrance scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each.

Sears High School Design Competition

Design Exchange is proud to announce the 16th Annual Sears Canadian High School Design Competition. The aim of the competition is to promote the study and awareness of various design disciplines in schools across Canada.
