Canada World Youth Programs

Canada World Youth manages several youth exchange programs for young people. They are currently recruiting for 2012-2013 programs for their various programs including Youth Leaders in Action, Global Learners, International Aboriginal Youth Internships and the Aboriginal Youth Excellence Program. These opportunities are aimed at 17-29 year olds and include experiences both within and outside of Canada.

French Language Bursaries

The Explore program gives students and opportunity to visit another region of Canada while learning French for give weeks in the summer. Participants must have completed grade 11 to be eligible.

Most expenses are paid by the program.

Lester B. Pearson College Scholarship

February 15 Deadline

One Saskatchewan student is chosen each year to attend the two-year, International Baccalaureate program at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, an United World College. This provides recipients with the opportunity to excel academically, to become involved in service activities and to gain an increased understanding and tolerance for world cultures.
 
The scholarship is limited to Grade 11 students attending a Saskatchewan school that is provincially funded. The selection process involves a half-day session where students give a presentation and participate in discussion on  pre-assigned topics. A personal interview follows in the afternoon.

Saskatchewan - Skills Canada Competitions

Skills Canada Saskatchewan will be hosting the 14th Annual Provincial Skills Competition March 15th – 16th, 2012 in Regina. Check out the website for competition areas  and register in January, 2012. For more information, call the Skills office at 306-775-1890. With over 30 skill areas there are many competitions that do not require access to a specialized shop area. Preparation for competitions like Work Place Safety, Job Skill Demonstration, Prepared Speech, and Job Interview can be supported in any school setting

CWSE-Prairies Logo Contest.


All high school (grades 7 to 12, inclusively), college and university students in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are encouraged to enter the CWSE-Prairies logo contest. The logo’s symbology should integrate the five concepts that are the core of the Chair program. The deadline for entries is January 15, 2012.


The winning logo will be used on the program website and on selected promotional materials that will be distributed by the NSERC-CWSE-Prairies program to students, teachers and other stakeholders inCanada, but particularly in the Prairies.

Pre-employment Hair Stylist is the newest addition to Lakeland College's pre-employment programs



Pre-Employment Hair Stylist 26 -Week Pre-employment Training Certificate

In 22 weeks program you'll learn and practice the hair stylist trade during evening and weekend classes. This will be followed by a 4-week practicum. In just 6 months, you'll be ready to work in this exciting trade. 
 •In partnership with the Lloydminster Public School Division, Lakeland College students will participate in lecture, hands-on training and labs in the innovative hairstyling classroom at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School.
•Instructors teach from an industry standard as well as Pivot Point curriculum and texts.
•Students will learn about the fundamentals of the hairstyling profession.
•Program content will concentrate on haircutting and styling, with an introduction to texturizing and colouring.
•Students will be given the opportunity to live the learning during hands-on practice, labs and a 140 -hour practicum.
•Prior to practicum, students are equipped to challenge their first year apprenticeship training exam.
•Following the practicum component of the program, successful students will have the skills to join the workforce while completing the remaining portion of the 1,400 hours of work experience required for the Alberta Apprenticeship Board.
•High school students enrolled in the cosmetology program can build on their skills by taking part in this evening and weekend program - meaning they will gain exceptional training and experience and be ready to work soon after graduation.

Schedule:
The first program session starts January 30, 2012 and ends July 28, 2012.  Classes will be held during evenings and weekends.

Requirements:  Applicants must have English Language 10-2 and Applied Math 10 or  equivalent or pass an entrance exam and/or interview.

University of Saskatchewan: Important Deadlines

February 15

This is the deadline to apply for the faculties of Kinesiology and Education (Direct Entry only, which is ONLY for these faculties:

  • Aboriginal Teacher Education Programs
  • Combined Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Music in Music Education
  • Practical & Applied Arts
  • University of Saskatchewan Competitive Entrance Awards

    Application Deadline: February 15

    Competitive Entrance Awards are based on academic achievement, financial need, and/or contributions to school and community life. These awards also recognize particular backgrounds, acknowledge contributions to certain clubs, and reward achievement in music or athletics. Competitive Entrance Awards are available to:
    • students proceeding directly from high school to university; and
    • students who have been out of high school for one or more years and have less than 18 credit units transferable to a program of study at the University of Saskatchewan.
    Starting in 2012-13, each student can receive payment of one Guaranteed Entrance Scholarship and one Competitive Entrance Award. If eligible to receive multiple awards, students will be contacted to confirm which award they will be accepting. Students can receive additional awards administered at the college/department level or from an external source. Self-declared St. Thomas More (STM) students may be eligible for additional awards and will be contacted when the STM awards application becomes available (usually in August). To apply for these awards, click here.

    In order to qualify for these awards, students must also complete and application to the University of Saskatchewan by the February 15 Early Application Deadline. To apply, click here.

    SIAST: Important Deadlines

    A small number of SIAST programs are designated as high demand.  These high-demand programs have admission requirements plus additional selection criteria.  The application window is from 8:00 a.m., October 1 to 4:30 p.m., February 15 (local times) each academic year.  All supporting documentation is required by February 28(29).

    UR Guaranteed Program

    Here is information about the UR Guaranteed Program as described by the U of R:

    The UR Guarantee Program will support students through every step of their university experience to successful employment. We will be there to make sure their transition is smooth and stress-free.
    We provide your students with access to academic supports, service and leadership opportunities, career development, and ways to get involved on campus and in the community.
     Reasons students should join:
    To ensure they are making the most of their University experience
    To gain valuable work experience, build their career portfolios and stand out from the competition
    To strengthen their leadership skills and build school spirit
    To improve their study skills and academic performance
    To meet new people and have fun!
    And for new students (and those with less than 30 credit hours): if they do not secure career-related employment within six months of graduation, they will be eligible to come back for another year of undergraduate classes free of charge (tuition and course fees).

    On Wednesday, February 2, Campion College will be hosting an information night for prospective students. This session is for prospective students and for newly admitted Campion students. Some of the topics covered will be: the application process, qualifying programs, and the registration process. They will also have an application session and scholarship application session for interested students.

    Visual Arts Portfolio Review Dates Set: March 9 & March 28
    Students applying for selection to the BFA Visual Arts Major may make an appointment with the Department of Visual Arts for a portfolio review and interview beginning February 1st. 2012.

    Note: All students interested in Visual Arts should apply to the BA Visual Arts major. Students interested in the BFA for September entry must make an appointment as noted above and will be advised of their acceptance after the review.

    Enrolment Services will be hosting Scholarship Workshops around the province in the Winter Semester so check the website to see where the nearest one is!

    March 15: Priority application deadline for all direct entry undergraduate programs. The priority deadline is the recommended deadline to ensure best course selection and opportunities for enrolment and other university services such as scholarships, residence and parking.
    May 1: Deadline to apply for residence for a guaranteed room
    August 1: Final deadline for all programs (excluding Education and Nursing). If a program still has space available, it may be extended beyond this deadline. Extensions will be posted on the futurestudent Web site.

    Schulich Leader Scholarships

    These new scholarships are for students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics areas of study at participating Canadian universities in the fall of 2012.

    This program asks every high school to select one student to represent their school as a Schulich Leader Nominee. From this pool, 20 universities across Canada will select one outstanding student to be their Schulich Leader, each of whom will receive a four-year scholarship valued at $60 000 to support their studies.     Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of Saskatchewan Bursary

    Deadline: March 15
    Amount: $1000.00
    This bursary is awarded yearly to a worthy student who has obtained an overall average of 75% in all subjects for both grades 11 and 12 (based on subjects completed to date). Applicants must complete a form, to be obtained through their school guidance counsellor, as well as submit letters of reference, a letter of intent and a transcript of marks.     United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth

    Application Deadline: January 15, 2012
    Grade 11 students, ages 16 or 17, with a minimum of one year of high school remaining are eligible to apply for a 10-day, all expense paid tour of New York City/The United Nations.
    All applicants must be willing to speak in a public speaking competition in Regina in late February 2012 and submit an original essay of 450-500 words describing the United Nations involvement in a current affair.

    RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program

    This scholarship is intended to support those Aboriginal Students who have at least 2 years remaining in their current academic program. Scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of personal and academic achievements and personal financial need.

    All entrants must complete an application form available here. Grade 12 students or recent graduates in Saskatchewan who are entering full-time agriculture related post-secondary studies in 2012 are eligible.

    i) The future information and technological needs of agricultural producers; or
    ii) One or more common myths about agriculture. Essays must dispel the myth(s) through research, facts and statistics.
