Lakeland College - Counsellor's Update

December 15 - deadline to register for Lakeland College’s Annual Counsellors’ Update, on Thursday January 11, 2007 at the Lloydminster Campus. Please note the date change.

This event will introduce the most current information regarding not only Lakeland College, but also numerous other post-secondary institutions in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. This will be a day full of opportunity for counsellors to network with post-secondary representatives on behalf of their schools.

Registration is 9 - 9:30am. Lakeland College will provide lunch and A Closer Look at Lakeland, which will involve a more in-depth look at what is happening at Lakeland College. A post-secondary publication fair will follow lunch.

Greystone Scholar Deadline - U. of S.

The nomination deadline for students graduating Grade 12 in June 2006 has been extended to January 9, 2006. To qualify for this award a student must have an award average of 95% or higher.

Nobel Symposium, University of Saskatchewan

High school students are invited to the Nobel Symposium on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 in the Neatby-Timlin Theatre (Arts Room 241) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. At this event, U. of S. professors will discuss the winners of the Nobel Prizes, the Peace Prize, the Abel Prize in Math and the Ig Nobel Prizes (for all that's goofy and imaginative).

Pizza and pop are provided, as well as the opportunity to tour campus with a U. of S. student.

New Programs - the U. of Guelph is now offering an Equine Management major that provides comprehensive training in the biology, physiology and behaviour of horses with a solid foundation in business principles and ethics.

Also, a Bachelor of Applied Science major in Adult Development, Families and Well Being is now being offered with a focus on understanding the influences on health from young adulthood to senior age.

Second Language Summer Program 2007

The French Education Language Branch is continuing to offer the Explore Program (formerly known as the Summer Language Bursary Program). The provincial quota for Saskatchewan is 243 Anglophone and 30 Francophone students, chosen on a random basis. Priority is given to students who have never received a bursary through this program.

Students may now apply for the program after having at least grade 11 or be at the postsecondary level by the time the program starts. See www.myexplore.ca for details.

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program 2007

Deadline - January 31, 2007 - The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program encourages and rewards graduating high school students who have distinguished themselves through environmental community service, extracurricular and volunteer activities and academic excellence. These scholarships are offered to students entering their first year of post-secondary education in the discipline of their choice.

Fifteen awards of $5000 are offered annually, to be applied directly towards tuition, books, room and board or other educational expenses for the first year post-secondary full time studies in Canada.

A national winner, selected from the fifteen regional winners will be awarded an Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award and a Panasonic notebook computer at the national awards ceremony. See www.earthday.ca or www.toyota.ca for further details.

Remax Quest for Excellence Program

The RE/MAX Quest for Excellence Program was established in June 2000, by RE/MAX of Western Canada, to recognize the success and ongoing pursuits of Western Canadian students. Each year, RE/MAX will award $12,000 in bursaries to grade 12 students from Western Canada. For further information, see

The Wood Manufacturing Council

The Wood Manufacturing Council is Canada's human resources sector council for the advanced wood products processing industry. It works with governments, industry, educational institutions and other interested parties to develop the work force for Canda's wood manufacturing industry.

The industry is looking for young people from apprenticeship programs, as well as college and university graduates.

Wendy's Classic Achiever Award

Deadline - Wednesday, December 20 - This award is for students who:
  • are Canadian citizens or permanent residents living in Canada
  • are in their graduating year of a Canadian high school or CEGEP, with the intent to enter college or university in the next academic year
  • have achieved at least a 70% grade average in their previous year
  • have participated in at least one extracurricular activity
  • have demonstrated involvement in their local communities (e.g. volunteer work)

The awards structure is:

  • 10 awards of $2,000
  • 20 awards of $1,000
  • 180 awards of $500
