University of Saskatchewan - Applications and Deadlines

Applications for admission for the 2017-2018 academic year opened online in early October, and up-to-date admission requirements and application deadlines are all available at explore.usask.ca. December 1 is the deadline to apply for early admission to programs in the Edwards School of Business, the College of Engineering and the College of Kinesiology, and is also the deadline to apply for admission for all entering students who plan to apply for Best and Brightest Entrance Scholarships. By December 1, applicants must submit: the online application for admission and application fee, an up-to-date transcript, an official timetable or class schedule listing all classes they will be completing, and proof of English proficiency, if required. Shad Experience

HAD is a registered Canadian charity that empowers exceptional high school students – at a pivotal point in their education – to recognize their own capabilities and envision their extraordinary potential as tomorrow’s leaders and change makers. Each year, SHAD provides the opportunity for 700+ students from across Canada and internationally to attend a month-long summer program, in-residence at one of our Canadian host universities, focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & math). There are currently more than 15,500 SHAD alumni including 30 Rhodes Scholars, Top 40 Under 40 & Top 20 Under 20 award recipients, and many other accomplished professionals, all sharing the transformational SHAD experience and able to leverage their SHAD network for life. Founded in 1980, SHAD is based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Students selected through the rigorous, competitive process for places in the summer program are top performers who are also well-rounded emerging leaders demonstrating initiative, creativity and flair. They are leaders in their schools, volunteers in their communities, and are often gifted musicians, artists and athletes.

Unique Challenges and Rewards

Each of our SHAD campuses offers an immersive program of lectures, workshops, projects and activities. Inside and outside the classroom, SHAD builds on the STEAM foundation, introducing participants to a multi-disciplinary program that offers unique experiences and a new way of understanding the world. Speakers include university professors, business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators, inspiring students to set aspirational goals.

SHAD campuses build their programming around a theme of national significance, which changes each year and is released the first week of each annual session. Participants are challenged with a big, complex issue and are asked to find bold solutions, working together with their peers to bring their ideas to life. Success comes from figuring things out together and learning from fellow students. Winning projects are selected per campus to advance to national judging. The results of the competition are announced during the SHAD - John Dobson Entrepreneurship Cup Awards held each fall.

Volunteer Internships

SHAD program participants are eligible to compete for a summer volunteer internship for the month of August, immediately following the July in-residence university program, and SHAD assists with placements.

Alumni with Uncommon Purpose

The SHAD experience doesn’t end with the completion of the summer program. There are many benefits to being a SHAD including being part of an extensive peer-to-peer network of like-minded SHADs for life. Canadian Forces Information Session

REGULAR OFFICER TRAINING PLAN (ROTP) INFORMATION SESSION

The Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre Detachment Ottawa will be conducting an information session highlighting the opportunity for university-level subsidized education leading to a bachelor’s degree and a commission as an Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. Lakeland College Open House

This year’s event is Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Lloydminster and Vermilion campuses. Sessions run from 9 am to 3 pm both days at both campuses. 

You can sit in on classes, take the lead through various activities, and tour the campus and residence. You’ll also meet instructors, students and staff and get your questions answered! 

If you’re ready to apply to Lakeland, Open House is the time to do it as we waive the $90 application fee. In other words, you can apply to any Lakeland College program for free.

U of C undergraduate application opened on Saturday, Oct. 1. These are a few answers to frequently asked quetions: 

• Students must report all of their first and second semester grade 12 courses
• Students do not need to self-report grades
• Students do not need to list any courses from grade 11 or earlier

Students should select a first and second choice program and their second choice should have a lower competitive admission average

U of R Open House

The U of Regina Fall Open House is coming up on Saturday, October 22. Please encourage your students to register for the event online and come check out campus, win prizes, learn about programs, visit with academic advisors, and be admitted to the U of R that day!

Grade 12 students who apply for admission at Fall Open House will recieve a $30 discount on their application fee, a pair of 2016 edition U of R mittens, and be admitted on the spot! All programs will be offering admission that day excluding competitive entrance programs (Nursing & Education) but students can still apply to those programs and receive the discount and mittens! Students simply need to bring their high school certified transcript.

UBC Scholarship and Funding Information Update

Undergraduate entrance scholarships

The Major Entrance Scholarship program recognizes exceptional students for their academic and non-academic achievements by offering awards valued up to $40,000. Students who apply by December 1 will be automatically considered for this award. 

The Centennial Scholars Entrance Award is designed to improve access to post-secondary education for students facing significant financial barriers. This award is valued up to $80,000 and requires a separate application. Deadline to apply is December 1. 

A number of Major Entrance Scholarships and Centennial Scholars Entrance Awards are designated specifically for Aboriginal students. Applicants can self-identify as Aboriginal in their application to UBC. 

International undergraduate entrance scholarships

UBC also recognizes the achievements of outstanding students from around the world by devoting non-public funds to scholarships and awards for international students. 

Tuition waiver for youth in care

UBC is now offering a tuition waiver for eligible youth aging out of care. Students can identify as a youth in care in their application to UBC. 

Schulich Leadership Scholarships

Nomination deadline - February 1, 2017
This $100 million program funds 50 undergraduate scholarships each year, across top Canadian universities. It is aimed at funding the next global pioneers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Canadian schools can nominate students fitting the following criteria:

• Nominees must possess at least two of three criteria:
  • Academic Excellence
  • Leadership (community, business or entrepreneurial)
  • Financial Need
• To qualify, Nominees must:
• Graduate high school in the 2016/2017 academic year
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Enroll at one of our partner universities

University of Alberta: Open House and Campus Visits

Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship Program

Scholarships of up to $10,000 are awarded to full-time students in their last year of high school with financial need (family income under $65,000) who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, a commitment to pursue a post-secondary education, a desire to contribute to society, and a good academic record.

Loran Scholars

Students who are dedicated to serving others, show promise of leadership and have integrity, courage, compassion, grit and a high level of personal autonomy. Awards include:

Renewable for up to four years, with a total value of $100,000, each Loran Award includes:

An annual stipend of $10,000

• A matching tuition waiver from one of 25 partner universities
• Personal mentorship from a Canadian leader
• Access to our network and up to $10,000 in funding for summer internships in three different sectors
• An orientation expedition through Algonquin Park
• Annual retreats and scholar gatherings

There are also 90 finalist and provincial awards to promising candidates who are not selected as Loran Scholars.

Grade 12 students may apply now at apply.loranscholar.ca. They may also view the application overview and a sample application form. As in previous years, they will need to submit a transcript, request a reference from a teacher or community member and have their school sponsorship confirmed (if applicable) before the deadline.

October 19th is the deadline for school-sponsored applications, and each high school may sponsor up to three students. Additional students may submit direct pool applications (without sponsorship) by October 26th.

Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship

The Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship (SAS) provides all new grade 12 graduates, including Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED® students, up to $500 per year, to a lifetime maximum of $2,000, to be applied to their tuition costs at a Saskatchewan post-secondary institution.

You are eligible if:

• You successfully graduated from grade 12 in Saskatchewan (including ABE and GED®) on or after January 1, 2012; and
• You are enrolled at a Saskatchewan post-secondary institution in a program that is recognized for Canada-Saskatchewan student loans (certificate, diploma, and degree programs) or an apprenticeship program.

With the exception of both Lakeland College campuses and specific specialized health programs, programs at post-secondary institutions outside of Saskatchewan are not eligible

News from Sask Polytech

Agreement between Sask Polytech and the U of S Edwards School of Business 

Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Saskatchewan's  (U of S) Edwards School of Business signed an agreement today that allows business students to transfer between institutions.  Read more!

Aboriginal Policing Preparation Credential is changing to a certificate from an applied certificate. Esthetician Admission requirement will be Grade 10, English Language Requirement.   Educational Assistant Program is suspended at the Regina Campus.   The program is available full-time at the Saskatoon Campus and on a part-time basis through continuing education. Funeral Service New admission requirements: Grade 12 with Biology 30, and either English Language Arts A30 (minimum 60%) or English Language Arts B30 (minimum 60%).

Society of Petroleum Engineers

The Lloydminster Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers donates these awards to worthy candidates to recognize graduating high school students:

The scholarships are intended to financially assist students who will be continuing their education in a post-secondary institute and who are majoring in SCIENCE or ENGINEERING with relationship to the petroleum industry. At the time of awarding the scholarship the applicant must be enrolled full time in a post-secondary program of studies at a university, college or technical school.

Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarship 2016

Deadline: June 15

The Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarship Program is available to Canadian high school students who are enrolled in their final year of high school as of May 29, 2016 and eligible to graduate from high school in 2016. Those eligible for a scholarship must be planning to enroll at a Canadian post‑secondary institution (degree or diploma) in a first-year agriculture, food science or culinary program.

If you have applied for entry into a college or university, but have not yet been accepted, you can still apply for a Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarship. However, if you are awarded a scholarship, you must provide an acceptance letter from your educational institution.

Successful applicants will each be awarded a scholarship valued at $1,500, based on demonstrated academic standards and leadership in the community. Selection will be made by an independent panel.

Since 2009, uSask's Graduation Powwow has been held in the spring to celebrate the academic achievements of graduating First Nations, Métis and Inuit students from the our university and from high schools throughout Saskatchewan.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free event or you can watch a live stream of the grand entry and honouring ceremonies online from your own home or school.
