NEW PROGRAM: BACHELOR OF ARTS
IN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
Available for fall 2022, the BA in Language and Culture within
the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures is
responding to the recent appearance in university graduate studies in
Alberta and elsewhere of programs in language, literary, and cultural
studies and is recognizing the City of Calgary’s growth as one of Canada’s
most ethnically diverse major cities.
The degree prepares students richly for
MA and PhD studies across the world in cultural studies, in stand-alone
language area programs in Arabic Language and Muslim Cultures, German,
Italian Studies, and Russian, and in such professional areas as education,
global affairs, and translation. This same preparation gives students
important steps up in career positions whose employers are looking to build
diverse workplace teams that call for more substantive intercultural
competence.
The degree provides students with a
multidisciplinary education that brings together courses on language and
culture areas and courses that reach across languages and cultures.
Students engage in focused language, literary, and cultural studies in one
or two language areas (Arabic Language and Muslim Cultures, German, Italian
Studies, Russian), and complement these studies with core coursework in
cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, and comparative studies.
The BA provides students with learning
opportunities that are unique to the Faculty of Arts. The School, more than
any other academic unit in the Faculty, is situated to offer this BA. Its
specialists in Arabic Language and Muslim Cultures, German, Italian
Studies, and Russian come together to form cross-cultural communities of
expertise in language teaching, applied linguistics, and literary and
cultural studies.
NEW PROGRAM: BACHELOR OF
SCIENCE IN SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING SYSTEMS
With all eyes on a cleaner, healthier
future, the Schulich School of Engineering is excited to announce
its new Sustainable Systems Engineering major. Students admitted in
fall 2022 will be able to choose Sustainable Engineering following their
first-year courses. A reminder that we have a guaranteed placement
program.
The Bachelor of Science program in
Sustainable Systems Engineering is an innovative learning path that will
appeal to a broad range of students wishing to pursue an engineering career
in a world that is increasingly environmentally conscious.
Sustainable Systems Engineering is a
technical, transdisciplinary field focusing on how to design, integrate,
and manage complex systems over their life cycles, with a goal of
environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The program focuses on
sustainably engineered systems and integrates material from a number of
engineering disciplines (civil, chemical, mechanical, geomatics, software
and electrical), as well as science, indigenous studies, architecture,
agriculture, and business.
The multidisciplinary character of the
Sustainable Systems Engineering program will train graduates to be
professional and versatile and, thus, well-placed in a modern and diverse
economy.
Upon graduation, students may find
themselves in a number of careers related to cleantech, including renewable
energy (solar, wind, geothermal); green communities and infrastructure;
sustainable design; sustainable food, agriculture, and biomass solutions;
supply chain management; and public utility analysis and regulation.
Sustainable Systems Engineering is
engineering for the planet, and for the future.

nomination is January 26, 2022. The deadline for UCalgary's High School Awards is March
1st. If you have a student that is looking to learn more about

NEW INITIATIVE: INDIGENOUS
PATHWAY
The University of Calgary’s Schulich
School of Engineering (SSE) is pleased to announce the creation of the SSE
Indigenous Pathway Program, starting in September 2022. This program has
been developed in recognition of the profound contributions that Indigenous
learners bring to the school and profession, and is grounded in principles
of equality, inclusion, and diversity. This initiative supports
both the University of Calgary’s Indigenous Strategy (ii’ taa’ poh’to’p)
and Engineers Canada’s commitment to Indigenous peoples in
engineering.
This program will aim to foster a
culturally sensitive environment in which self-identified Indigenous
students are provided with the necessary support to grow their skills,
well-being, and success as engineering scholars. The SSE Indigenous Pathway
program is intended for students who show promise as engineering students,
but who may not qualify under the traditional admission process
The program consists of four key
elements:
- Direct Entry into
Engineering through an Indigenous Admissions process
- Individualized student
pathways through the common core curriculum that may include
preparatory high school content through on-site courses
- Culturally responsive
student advising and holistic student supports
- Financial support
The program will support inclusive
engineering education through the incorporation of Indigenous ways of
knowing, being and doing into the preparatory engineering curriculum.
In conjunction with the Indigenous Pathways Program Coordinator and the Engineering
Student Centre Student Advisors, students will have the opportunity to
design flexible, responsive schedules allowing them the time and resources
needed to succeed. The Indigenous Pathways Coordinator will also support
students in areas including leadership, guidance, and connections to
resources to support them in networking and in their future careers.
On top of a long list of available
scholarships and bursaries, all students admitted into the SSE Indigenous
Pathway Program will receive an SSE Diversity Champion in Engineering Award
upon entry. All students within the SSE Indigenous Pathway will
additionally receive an SSE award equal to the cost of each foundation
course that they are required to complete.
We anticipate that the SSE Indigenous
Pathway Program will foster increased collaborations amongst Indigenous
students across campus, will enrich UCalgary’s Indigenous Strategy, and
will increase Indigenous representation and participation in the school and
in the profession.
