Youth Summer Programs in Law and Medicine

The University of Toronto is once again offering Youth Summer Programs in Law and Medicine for the summer of 2012. Students are free to choose the number of weeks they would like to join, from one to four (Law) or five (Medicine).

In addition, this year, there is an opportunity to spend two weeks working in a research laboratory under the supervision of a Faculty of Medicine researcher, from July 15 to 28.

SIAST Program Changes

New Programs:
Mining Engineering Technology is a new program to SIAST. Applications are now being accepted for this two-year diploma program that begins in August 2012.

Fabricator-Welder certificate - The 34-week certificate program will start July 1, 2012 and will include one fall intake of 12 students. The program will be based on Steel Fabricator Level 1 and Welder Level 1 apprentice curriculum and will contain enhancements to Level 1 content so that graduates can return for Level 2 training.

Indigenous Peacekeeping - This 25-week program will prepare graduates to help meet the community demand for trained individuals within First Nations communities who will ensure personal protection and public safety. The program will start July 1, 2012.

Canadian Forces accreditation
SIAST's Medical Laboratory Technology, Primary Care Paramedic and Dental Assisting programs have been recognized by the Canadian Forces (CF) and now qualify for a CF Paid Education program. Students who graduate from the Medical Laboratory Technology program receive advanced standing as Medical Laboratory Technologists, Primary Care Paramedic grads receive advanced standing as Medical Technicians, and Dental Assisting grads receive advanced standing as Dental Technicians. SIAST will give your school a SUMO robot kit that has everything you need to be ready for the rumble (check competition rules for details). Your team builds it, programs it and then tests it on the included competition mat. Returning teams can work on making their school's robot even better!

They are set to go on March 22, 2012. Registration is now open! You can register online or download a PDF version of the registration form and fax or mail it in. In addition to online registration, the myRobotRumble website has a new discussion board feature. Participants will be able to ask questions, receive updates and post comments.

Sask Youth Apprenticeship Industry Scholarship

The Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarship encourages Saskatchewan youth to complete the SYA Program and enter into a career in a skilled trade within two years of high school graduation. For 2011-2012, the number of $1000 scholarships to be awarded through participating Saskatchewan high schools will increase from 40 to 80; that means more youth than ever will benefit. A minimum of 20 scholarships will be awarded to SYA graduates through internal SATCC processes. The increase in SYA Industry Scholarships is made possible due to significant financial contributions by the Government of Saskatchewan through the Saskatchewan Innovations and Opportunity Scholarship Program.

Please note: Tobe selected to nominate an SYA Industry Scholarship winner, SYA participatinghigh schools must submit participating high school student SYA contracts orprogress information to SATCC no later than January 13, 2012.

The Garfield Weston Entrance Awards

The Garfield Weston Foundation will distribute up to 25 entrance scholarships to students entering their first year of college studies in Canada for the 2012-2013 academic year. Each award comprises a tuition waiver renewable for up to 3 additional years, an $8000 stipend, renewable for up to 3 additional years and access to summer program funding of up to $3500 as well as mentorship.

Entrance W. Garfield Weston Awards recognize and support the outstanding college-bound student who is:

passionate about his or her field of study;
curious, courageous, and willing to try new things; and
community-minded and truly committed to being involved and making a difference in society.

In order to be eligible for an Entrance W. Garfield Weston Award, a student must:

be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
be entering his or her first year of full time college studies in the fall of 2012 in a program recognized as eligible by the college and the W. Garfield Weston Awards;

One Saskatchewan student is chosen each year to attend the two-year, International Baccalaureate program at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, an United World College. This provides recipients with the opportunity to excel academically, to become involved in service activities and to gain an increased understanding and tolerance for world cultures.

The scholarship is limited to Grade 11 students attending a Saskatchewan school that is provincially funded. The selection process involves a half-day session where students give a presentation and participate in discussion on pre-assigned topics. A personal interview follows in the afternoon.

•Students will learn about the fundamentals of the hairstylingprofession.

•Program content will concentrate on haircutting and styling, with anintroduction to texturizing and colouring.

•Students will be given the opportunity to live the learning duringhands-on practice, labs and a 140 -hour practicum.

•Prior to practicum, students are equipped to challenge their firstyear apprenticeship training exam.

•Following the practicum component of the program, successful studentswill have the skills to join the workforce while completing the remainingportion of the 1,400 hours of work experience required for the AlbertaApprenticeship Board.

•High school students enrolled in the cosmetology program can build ontheir skills by taking part in this evening and weekend program - meaning theywill gain exceptional training and experience and be ready to work soon aftergraduation.

Competitive Entrance Awards are based on academic achievement, financial need, and/or contributions to school and community life. These awards also recognize particular backgrounds, acknowledge contributions to certain clubs, and reward achievement in music or athletics. Competitive Entrance Awards are available to:

students proceeding directly from high school to university; and
students who have been out of high school for one or more years and have less than 18 credit units transferable to a program of study at the University of Saskatchewan.

Starting in 2012-13, each student can receive payment of one Guaranteed Entrance Scholarship and one Competitive Entrance Award. If eligible to receive multiple awards, students will be contacted to confirm which award they will be accepting. Students can receive additional awards administered at the college/department level or from an external source. Self-declared St. Thomas More (STM) students may be eligible for additional awards and will be contacted when the STM awards application becomes available (usually in August). New Holland & Lakeland partner to enhance agriculture programs

Lakeland College and New HollandAgriculture announced in September a new multi-million dollar, 10-year dealthat will propel Lakeland students to the forefront of post-secondaryagricultural education and hands-on training that incorporates advancedtechnology and the most up-to-date equipment. As part of the new agreement withLakeland, New Holland will consign agricultural equipment to the college on arotating basis annually or otherwise agreed upon. This academic year, about$320,000 worth of equipment including a T7 Series Tier IV EcoBlue Tractor, a 50HP Boomer50 Tractor, a 56 HP L223 Skid Steer Loader, a manure spreader, aBR7090 round baler and four Rustlers utility vehicles have arrived on campus.During the 10-year collaboration, it is estimated the total retail value of theNew Holland equipment consigned to Lakeland will exceed $12 million. Inrecognition of New Holland’s significant commitment, the college has renamedits farm operation to be the Lakeland College Student Managed Farm – Powered byNew Holland. New Hollandalso established a $100,000 endowment fund at Lakeland that will supply anumber of annual student scholarships and awards which will start in 2013, thecollege’s centenary year.

Prospective SIAST students should be aware of the different application processes that exist for SIAST programs and the resulting deadlines. The procedure for applying is different between these 3 program groups:

1. First-Qualified, First Admitted - This procedure applies to most SIAST programs. You can submit anapplication at any time, and it is considered for the upcoming start date for the program. The earlier you provide the qualifications for admission to the next start date, the earlier you might begin your studies. More information about these programs can be found here.

2. Competetive Entry - The only program in this category is the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, delivered in partnership with the University of Regina. The current application deadline is February 12 and applications are ranked according to specific program requirements. Check this link for details.

3. High Demand Programs - This procedure is for a small group of programs including Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology, Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Radiologic Technology, Power Engineering Technology and Practical Nursing. These programs have a specific application deadline (usually the end of February) and a more detailed application process which may include a Career Investigation. Every week of the school year, 120 to148 teens from across Canada (ages 14-17) come to Ottawa, where they discover their country through each other, learn about Canadian institutions, meet famous and accomplished Canadians, explore exciting career options, develop their civic leadership skills and live an extraordinary bilingual experience. Over 86,000 youth have lived the EWC experience, so far!

Weekly themes include: Law, Arts and Culture, International Affairs, Medicine and Health, Science and Technology, Ecology and Environment, Vimy: Canada's Coming of Age, Journalism and Communications, RCMP, Canada Remembers, Politics in Canada and Sport and Fitness.

APTN Flag Contest

APTN is inviting young people between the ages of 12 -17 from across the country to design a flag that represents the richness and diversity of all of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples, and which illustrates what National Aboriginal Day means to them personally. As Canada’s only Aboriginal television network, this contest is just one of the ways APTN is providing opportunities for young people to share their vision and pride of Aboriginal culture and heritage.
The contest winner and a parent/guardian will be flown to Winnipeg to receive his/her prize and be part of APTN’s National Aboriginal Day celebrations. The winning flag will also fly on top of APTN’s headquarters in downtown Winnipeg. The winner will earn a cash prize of $500 and, if the design was initiated as part of a school project, his/her school will also receive $750 towards the purchase of learning materials.

Saskatchewan School Boards Association Education Scholarships

The Saskatchewan School Boards Association offers two $2500 scholarships each year. One goes to a student who is entering university in Saskatchewan and the other to a student entering a recognized institute of applied arts and sciences in Saskatchewan.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated good character, community leadership, financial need and a 500 word essay.

Radiation Therapy Open House

The Saskatchewan School of Radiation Therapy is inviting interested parties to attend a Radiation Therapy Open House. This tour/information session will consist of a short presentation about a career in radiation therapy and the education required to become a radiation therapist, and a tour of the radiation therapy department.

Tours will be held on Saturday April 16, 2011 at the Saskatoon Cancer Center and the Allan Blair Cancer Center in Regina. All students and/or guidance counselors are invited to attend.

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Scholarship

Saskatchewan Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, along with Dominion Comman are offering 10 scholarships of $300 each. In addition, Saskatchewan Command is offering 10 bursaries of $300 each.

These are offered to students who have completed their grade 12 and are continueinng their education in their first year at university, technical school or business college.

These scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic standing. The bursaries will be awarded on the basis of academic standing and financial need.
