Updates from the University of Alberta

Get away to the U of A!

20 Grade 11 students will be selected to see the University of Alberta like never before by attending the U of A Getaway from May 27 - 29, 2022. Attendees will join us in Alberta’s capital city, Edmonton, for an adventure that will include transportation reimbursement (up to a maximum based on location), accommodations, meals, and a jam-packed schedule of events! Applications are open until January 28, 2022. Students can learn more and apply at uab.ca/getaway. Please utilize our toolkit to share this experience on your own channels.

Apply for scholarships like a pro!

Scholarships are a great way to ease some of the financial stress that can come with pursuing post-secondary education. On December 16, students can attend our Scholarships 101 session to hear from an advisor about how to write a strong scholarship application. Registration is required and available at uab.ca/recruitmentevents.

New Awards

Applications for the Discover University of Alberta Award and the Turtle Spirit Pathway Award for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Students are now open until February 15, 2022. The awards are available to incoming students to the U of A. Students who have demonstrated financial challenges and barriers to attending university will be considered for up to $8,000 per year in award funding. Funding for the awards will be renewable for four to five years.

New applications have been created for both awards that will be separate from the entrance scholarship application. We have created images for each award to be used on your digital screens to help promote these opportunities.

Entrance scholarship applications close soon!

Our application-based entrance scholarship competition closes on January 12, 2022. Please note, a campus computing ID (CCID) is required in order to apply for entrance scholarships. In order to receive a CCID in time to work on a scholarship application over the winter closure, the last safe day to apply for admission is December 22, 2021. In general, it takes 2-3 business days for a CCID to be generated. uab.ca/awards

Loran Scholars Applications and Nominations

Wednesday, October 13th before 8:00pm ET is the deadline to submit all applications for the Loran Award.

Students can submit their applications at apply.loranscholar.ca. They may also view our award overview, information sheet, sample application form, and a recording of a 2022 Loran Award Information Session.

All eligible students will be welcome to apply by filling out the application, uploading a transcript, and naming a reference. School sponsorship is no longer required.

Even without school sponsorship, your help is as vital as ever. We rely on you to identify promising candidates showing evidence of character, commitment to service, and leadership potential. Sometimes you see these qualities in students before they see them in themselves. We will continue to depend on you to identify and encourage your students to apply, and to support them in submitting their applications on time. Thank you for your crucial work.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that both the reference writer has sufficient time to complete their parts before the deadline. If a student's application or reference form is not complete before 8:00pm ET on October 13th, that application will not be submitted.

What We Look For: As you know, our selection criteria are character, service, and leadership potential. We are looking for young people who deeply value honesty, are curious by nature, and are interested in a wide range of subjects. The scholars we select are willing to take meaningful risks and prioritize results over appearances. Each one has shown a sustained commitment to service in the community, has taken the initiative to create positive changes, and is interested in working towards a better world.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Thank you for encouraging your students to apply!

With our appreciation,
The Loran Scholars Foundation
