University of Alberta Updates

Application for admission to the University of Alberta opened October 1 and is available at uab.ca/apply. Students are encouraged to apply early as admission is competitive and space in our programs is limited. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and offers are administered on a rolling basis. If a student is not immediately admissible to their program(s) of choice, they will be reassessed if/when new information is received or if our admission parameters change.

To assist students with the application process, we have updated two of our key websites, uab.ca/start and uab.ca/apply. We are also creating a series of videos to guide students through the application process, starting with ‘Preparing to Apply’, which can also be found on uab.ca/apply. In addition, we are hosting Submitting Your Application workshops to further aid students and answer their questions.

Here are a couple quick reminders about the University of Alberta application:

  • Students self-report their own marks.
  • Students are asked to report all grade 11 and grade 12 courses.

Nav Canada's Aviation Summer Camp

Do You Know a Teen Who Has What it Takes to Leave Ordinary Behind This Summer?
I am writing to inform you of NAV CANADA’s third edition of the Explore Aviation Summer Camp, taking place in Cornwall, Ontario, this summer from Aug. 9-14 for young women, and from August 16-21 for young men. NAV CANADA* has opened enrollment and is seeking applications from teens entering Grade 10 (or secondary 4 in Quebec) in September 2020. As a leader and mentor to the next generation, I invite you to encourage teens you know to apply for this exciting opportunity.
Explore Aviation Summer Camp will offer 24 young women and 24 young men insider access to learn how aviation works in Canada, and who helps keep aircraft flying safely. This one week, all-expenses-paid camp uses hands-on learning to explore exciting career choices in aviation to allow participants to experience the power and potential of a science education, and to be empowered to reach for success.
Operated by NAV CANADA and just over one hour’s drive from our nation’s capital, Explore Aviation Summer Camp points the spotlight on careers in aviation where STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education is the key to success for the next generation of tomorrow’s workforce.
Participants of Explore Aviation Summer Camp are mentored by industry experts who will empower and motivate this next generation of aviation leaders by introducing them to inspirational and successful professionals, by highlighting unique career opportunities and working environments, and by demonstrating how STEM education leads to success.
Highlights include:
  • Learning how Canada’s aviation system works and who makes it work
  • Practice sessions controlling and advising aircraft in industry-leading simulators
  • Using the tools and technology to keep aircraft flying and safe
  • Touring NAV CANADA’s Flight Inspection Aircraft
  • Interacting with guest speakers: Air Traffic Services; Technical Operations; Engineering; Senior Executives
  • Taking day trips to Ottawa and Montreal: NAV CANADA tower and area control centre tours; city tours
Forty-eight participants will be selected from across Canada by a NAV CANADA committee composed of aviation professionals. Applicants must submit an essay of 350 to 500 words explaining why they want to attend Explore Aviation Summer Camp. A letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader must be included with the application.
If you know a teen who might be interested in this program, encourage them to visit NAV CANADA’s website for more information. The application deadline is March 8, 2020.
